Chapter Forty-Four

A nervous thrill shot up Kim’s spine, just like jumping into a lake in early summer, before it was really warm enough. She and Felicia had docked the carriage on their very first try. It had been sloppy. They’d hit the docking arm at a weird angle, but the mechanism had snatched the carriage and snapped it into place. Even Felicia looked proud, which seemed out of the ordinary. Her thick eyebrows usually made her seem angry. Kim gave her a smile, checked to make sure Barry was okay, then looked down from the back of the carriage.

The floor below was eight stories down. The walls around her were eight stories away, in every direction. The carriage jutted out in the middle of the big empty room, kinda like the filament in an old-fashioned light bulb, if it was lying on its side.

Kim glanced back at Felicia. “Do you think we should jump down?” It would probably be safe because of the low gravity, which had turned on the moment they docked.

“No,” Dad yelled.

He’d heard her from back in the tail, which narrowed down to a tube, sort of like the part of the light bulb you screwed in, except way skinnier and way, way longer. Kim frowned. It was a crappy comparison, because in a light bulb the filament came from the part you screwed in. Here, the docking arm protruded from the round end.

“Stay where you are,” Dad shouted. He said something to Priya, who sat on the floor beside him, then started forward.

Kona, who’d been down in the lowest part of the shuttle, ran up to meet him.

Felicia made a low grumbling noise. Something was definitely wrong.

“I want to get down,” Barry said. His whiny tone usually annoyed Kim, but she could tell he was scared. She put her arm around him and he leaned into her.

“I know Bud,” Dad called out. “The problem is, once you get down, you can’t get back up, so I want you to stay put, in case we need you there.”

The tail grew wider and wider where it connected with the main chamber, which meant Dad kept getting lower and lower as he came forward.

“You never said anything about getting chased during training,” Felicia said. “I want my money back.”

Dad didn’t laugh. He walked down the slope until he was almost directly below them, in the middle of the round part. Kona followed, slipping and sliding. Normally, this would have made Kim giggle, but right now she didn’t feel like giggling.

Dad studied the front wall. He opened and closed his fists, the way he sometimes did when he was really upset.

“Why can’t we just fly down to get you?” Barry asked.

Kim figured it out. “Undocking the carriage causes the door at the end of the tail to open. If we do that, the drones will get in.”

“Where’s the other carriage?” Felicia asked.

Dad craned his neck to look at them. “It’s outside. Priya sent it over to the bunker entrance.” His tone sounded angry.
